Twenty years ago, we turned an unused floor of the Fort Garry Hotel into something remarkable—Ten Spa. This wasn’t just a new addition; it was a shift in Canadian wellness standards. What started as a bold dream of creating a spa that set global benchmarks grew into a haven of indulgence and innovation, driven by curiosity, commitment, and vision.
The Spark of an Idea
When Ida, Owner and Managing Partner of The Fort Garry Hotel, first looked at the space that would become Ten Spa, it was hardly inspiring: a low-ceilinged, unused floor with cramped rooms from a bygone era where hotel house chamber maids once resided. But where others saw wasted space, Ida saw opportunity. Winnipeg was missing a luxurious, world-class spa experience, and the hotel’s ownership group knew they could fill that gap. They crunched the numbers, mapped out the spa business model, and had a breakthrough: at its core, running a spa is simply about mastering what they already knew best—selling rooms, only now, by the hour.
That’s when Elena Zinchenko came into the picture. A recent immigrant from Ukraine and a talented aesthetician, Elena shared Ida’s passion for skincare. At the time, Elena was working in a small salon located in Eaton’s Place, but her vision for a world-class spa was anything but small. Together, they explored spas across North America, learning from the best and identifying what could be done better. Every spa visit, every treatment experience, became part of the blueprint that shaped Ten Spa.
Building the Ten Spa Experience
Opening Ten Spa was about creating something more than just a luxurious space. It was about redefining spa treatments to be both indulgent and genuinely effective. From day one, the pair focused on developing protocols that prioritized results. Ten Spa wouldn’t just offer facials and massages—it would deliver customized, science-backed experiences.
Elena, Ten Spa’s first and only director, was perfect for the project–her engineering background and passion for aesthetics helped to cultivate a team of professionals who shared a singular vision. Today, Ten Spa is a place where luxury meets tangible results, and every treatment is tailored to each guest’s needs.
Expanding the Vision: Face Bar and Glo Skin Bar
As Ten’s clients’ needs evolved, so did the spa. People wanted personalized active treatments that fit into their busy schedules, which led us to conceptualize Face Bar. This “facial bar” offered high-quality, personalized skin care that could be done over lunch, providing access to quality treatments for clients on the go. It was a fresh step forward, making the essence of Ten Spa available to an even broader audience.
Introducing TenSkin Rx: The Next Iteration
Today, we’re proud to introduce TenSkin Rx, our latest venture. Located within Yoga Public at 280 Fort Street, TenSkin Rx brings the best of Ten Spa’s protocols to a streamlined, accessible format. With cutting-edge treatments like Microneedling, IPL and YAG lasers, and Radio Frequency, it offers powerful results-driven options without the extra amenities of Ten Spa, perfect for those who value efficiency over luxury while still benefiting from the expertise of a highly trained team.
