Founded more than a century ago as Canada’s first civic art museum, the Winnipeg Art Gallery (or WAG, as you’ll hear the locals call it) has grown to become the sixth largest gallery in the country. Located minutes from the Fort Garry Hotel, WAG has exhibitions to suit all tastes, from European Renaissance portraiture to contemporary American multi-media art. What makes WAG truly special, though, are its unique collections with direct cultural ties to Manitoba in particular and Canada as a whole. WAG’s almost 11,000 works of contemporary Inuit art constitute the largest public collection of its kind in the world. In addition to fine art, WAG also houses more than 4000 pieces of decorative art, including ceramics, metals, glass, and textiles, from the colonial period to the mid-20th century. WAG’s collection of 1300 photographs lays special emphasis on contemporary Canadian artists.
