Now that winter’s frosts are finally thawing under the warm (almost) spring sun, we’re sure you’re going to want to spend as much time as possible outdoors. If you’re willing to make one exception, though, and venture inside for an authentic Manitoba experience, we highly recommend the Winnipeg Art Gallery, affectionately dubbed “WAG” by the locals. Just minutes from the Fort Garry Hotel, WAG was established more than a hundred years ago as the nation’s very first civic art museum, and today, it proudly stands as Canada’s sixth largest. The 24,000 works that comprise the museum’s permanent collection represent major art movements from across the globe and eras from the Renaissance to today. As we said, this museum offers a specifically Manitoban and Canadian experience, too, with holdings of about 10,000 contemporary works of Inuit art and 1,300 pieces by photographers from across nation (just to name a few of the outstanding exhibits). And you’ll even have the chance to enjoy that burgeoning spring weather when you step out into the acclaimed rooftop sculpture garden.
